What is Acupuncture Detoxification?
Acupuncture detoxification is a technique that is used with drug detoxification, anxiety reduction and other conditions. Several studies from well renowned hospitals and universities have proven that acupuncture detoxification is an effective form of treatment for detoxification and addiction. In acupuncture detoxification, five acupuncture points located on the outer ear are stimulated by acupuncture needles. These are the Lung 2, Shen Men, Autonomic Point, Liver and Kidney points. The National Acupuncture Detoxification Association (NADA) protocol is followed.
What is the NADA Protocol? ( From the NADA Website)
"At five designated ear points in each auricle (outer ear), clinicians trained through NADA apply fine gauge, sterilized, one time use stainless steel needles just under the skin, where they remain for up to an hour while the client (in most circumstances) relaxes quietly in a comfortable chair. Ordinarily, groups of clients sit together while undergoing treatment. The procedure functions as an adjunct to a comprehensive treatment program offering the basic therapeutic elements of counseling, education, family involvement, mutual support group involvement, supportive health care of general nature. Clients in all types of treatment settings including inpatient, outpatient, incarcerated, shelters, harm reduction and street outreach can utilize this treatment. Among the benefits reported by clients and clinicians are improved program retention, a more optimistic and cooperative attitude towards the process of recovery, as well as reductions in cravings, anxiety, sleep disturbance and need for pharmaceuticals.”
What are the benefits of acupuncture detoxification?
Acupuncture detoxification is effective across all addictive substances. Other interventions only target a specific drug. Although originally developed for detoxification, the NADA protocol has shown efficacy when used in pretreatment harm reduction settings, throughout all stages of treatment, and as a relapse prevention/support intervention. It is consistent with twelve-step recovery.
It can be successfully integrated with a wide range of addiction treatment models, including those utilizing medications. Acupuncture detoxification treats the whole person – body, mind, emotions, and spirit – just as addiction impairs the whole person. The treatment does not require any effort on half of the patient, and it provides immediate as well as long-term effects. It is non-addictive. It improves the treatment environment as well as treatment outcomes. It is, paradoxically, even more effective with clients who or the hardest to treat. Anxious patients relax. Tired and apathetic patients reported an increased sense of vitality during and immediately after treatment. Most people experience a relaxing and centering feeling. As the number of treatment sessions increases, the patient will feel relatively harmonious most of the time. Acupuncture detox is valuable because it helps the patient prepare for the future, not merely coping with the past. It prepares the patient for better reception of therapeutic counseling, groups, and other challenges.
